Google Android Choice Screens

Google recently announced some major changes for search and Android to comply with the EU Digital Markets Act. Users across Europe will now be able to easily setup the default search engine and web browser on their Android phones.

The company announced additional choice screens, which will be displayed while setting up an Android device in Europe. The choice screens are meant to let users pick up their preferred search engine and browser at the time of initial setup.

Choice screens: Google says additional choice screens are built on user research and testing, as well as feedback from the industry. These will be shown up on Android phones as you set up a device, and soon on Chrome for desktop and iOS devices.

The search choice screen is only shown on devices where the OEM preinstalls the Google Search app and places the Google Search box on the home screen.

The browser choice screen will appear on phones and tablets in the EEA on which Chrome is set as default per an agreement between Google and its partners.

Google Wallet

Google Wallet has revised the minimum OS requirement for Android and Wear OS. The company mentioned that security updates won’t be provided, rendering tap-to-pay transactions insecure.

The revised document reveals that Google Wallet will require at least Android 9 or higher on smartphones and Wear OS 2.x or higher on smartwatches starting June 10, 2024.

This means users with Android Nougat devices (2016: 7.0, 7.1) and Oreo (2017: 8.0, 8.1) will be affected. Notably, the Android 9 Pie (as of October 2023) has a cumulative distribution of 86.4%.

To help keep Wallet features such as tap to pay transactions more secure, we must be able to send security updates to your device.

Google is continuously upgrading its Wallet platform with support for more bank cards. The company is also expanding the availability of the Wallet experience to more countries, with the latest entry marked in India.

Google appears to have started releasing Android’s new Find My Device outside the US and Canada. AndroidAuthority’s MishaalRahman spotted that Android’s new Find My Device feature starting to expand to more countries outside the US and Canada.

Consumers in Japan and the UK posted on X that their devices are getting the offline finding feature. Beyond Pixel, Google is also bringing it to other eligible Android devices such as the Moto Razr Plus. The initial rollout started last month, with expansion starting to take place now.

The new Find My Device network feature is useful for rediscovering lost devices including phones and accessories. Google also revealed that a user’s device location is encrypted using their screen lock and can only be seen by the owner.

Users will also have a few options for finding offline devices. In its settings, users will see “off,” “without network,” “high-traffic areas only,” and “network in all areas.” By default, the high-traffic area option is selected, which works in places like airports or “busy footpaths.”
