Google simplifies ‘Gemini Extensions’ to ‘Apps’

In today’s big Live event, Google shared some news: “Gemini Extensions” is now just “apps.” Plus, they made a small tweak to the model selector on the app’s home screen. The latest test version (16.8) of the Google app on Android has dropped the “Extensions” label everywhere in Gemini. You’ll see this change in the account menu and the settings page where you turn tools on or off.

Here’s how the wording looks now:

They’re calling them “apps” now—nothing fancy, no capital letters. This switch doesn’t seem to change how things work, though. The logo in the account menu hasn’t caught up yet—it’s still the old extension symbol.

This rename fits nicely for things like Workspace, Messages, Google Home, and YouTube. But for Utilities, which lets you use phone features, “Extensions” felt like a better word. Still, most people know “apps” better than “extensions” (think browser add-ons), so it’s an easy swap. This update hasn’t hit gemini.google.com/extensions yet, though.

On the home screen, there’s another small change. The model you’re using now shows up in a little oval button with a downward arrow. Before, it had a triangle next to the Gemini level, and it sat awkwardly in the middle. The new look is cleaner and simpler.
