Google explores stackable widgets for Android

To wrap up Widgets Spotlight Week, the Android crew held a YouTube Q&A yesterday. They talked about stackable widgets and whether we’ll see them on Android XR soon. Google knows some Android brands already have stackable widgets and that users and developers want them too. They said, “We’re checking this out for AOSP,” but they’re not ready to promise anything yet.

Samsung’s One UI lets you swipe widget stacks from side to side. If Google makes their own, they’ll likely follow that style since scrolling up and down on homescreens already opens apps or notifications.

Google also shared their thoughts on what widgets should do:

  • “We don’t think widgets should just copy everything an app does. The goal isn’t to put the full app on your homescreen.”
  • “A smart way to look at it is that each widget should tackle one key task for the user. If you want more features, make separate widgets that each shine at one thing.”
  • When asked about widgets for Android XR, Google said they see the potential but don’t have solid plans yet.

Imagine sticking floating widgets in your view—like a Google Home panel on the wall or quick music controls. It could be handy! Google’s still figuring things out, but it’s clear they’re listening to feedback and thinking about what’s next for widgets.
