Gboard’s new voice typing upgrade for Pixel users
Google is rolling out an exciting update for Gboard on Pixel phones, making voice typing even better. Originally launched with the Pixel 6 in 2021, the “Assistant voice typing” feature let users dictate messages and edit them using simple voice commands. Now, with Google Assistant fading from phones, Gboard is getting a fresh twist. The feature, once called “Assistant voice typing,” is now simply “Advanced features” in the settings. This change reflects Google’s shift toward Gemini, its new AI focus.
The updated tool still lets you speak to type, edit text, add emojis, and more—just without the old Assistant label. For example, you can say “delete” to remove words or “send” to finish a message, all hands-free. It’s a big step up from Gboard’s basic voice typing, which works offline but lacks these extras. The microphone icon still sports a light bar design from the Pixel 4 days, keeping things familiar.
This tweak is showing up in Gboard’s beta version 14.5.x for Android. While the name has changed, the experience stays smooth and powerful. Google’s move hints at bigger plans, like blending Gemini into Gboard for future upgrades. Other recent changes, like a colorful “Fix it” tool tied to Gemini, also point to this direction.
For Pixel fans, this means faster, smarter typing without lifting a finger. It’s perfect for quick texts or long emails on the go. Want to try it? Join the Gboard beta and check your voice typing settings. Google’s keeping the good stuff coming, one word at a time.
