Google’s Pixel Launcher could get two new App grid options in the future. A new report indicates that Google is considering adding 5×6 and 6×6 App grid layouts in Pixel Launcher to uplevel the customization.

Presently, 5 App grid layouts available in Google Pixel Launcher; 5×5, 4×5, 4×4, 3×3, and 2×2. The addition of 2 more layouts will benefit users who love having up to 36 app icons (via 6×6 grid) on a single page on the home screen.

Not only apps, but the home screen would allow using more widgets and icons together through new App grids. The forthcoming options would reduce the size of app icons for the arrangement of additional icons in the same space.

Several Pixel users filed requests on Google Issue Tracker, demanding the addition of 6×5 and 6×6 grid layouts. One of those requests was detected on the radar of a Google developer, who forwarded it to the development team.

  • We have passed the “Enhanced App Grid Customization feature” on to the product team for consideration for future work.

The official has only forwarded the feature request to the development team. It would take weeks or months to come into effect, however, we expect Google to roll out this change with the next major Android release.

Google Pixel 9 series will bring new on-device AI features. The company will introduce the next-gen Pixel phones later this year. Meanwhile, the latest version of Google’s AI Core app reveals some of the upcoming features that are in development.

According to the info, the Google Pixel 9 series will be capable of generative text-to-image without relying on the cloud. The Pixel 8 series supports AI-powered wallpaper generation, but it requires cloud services, however, the Pixel 9 would turn it entirely on-device.

Optical Character Recognition is a quite useful feature, which will be updated with improved on-device text recognition. Besides, Google Messages is developing on-device features to replace the cloud-powered ones, such as the ability to answer questions.

The AI Core app shows evidence of features like LLM (Large Language Model), AUTOFILL_SMART_REPLY for generating complex auto-reply suggestions, TEXT_CLASSIFICATION for categorizing text, and EMBEDDING for processing attached images or PDFs for tasks like summarization.

OnePlus and OPPO earlier revealed that their next flagships would be equipped with the Gemini Ultra AI model. Therefore, chances are high that premium Pixel 9 models might also feature Google’s most advanced large language AI model for on-device features.

Following its victory over Google, Epic Games proposed some reforms to a US judge regarding Android app distribution. Earlier, the company sued Google citing its monopoly in Android app distribution, and scored a legal victory apart from $700 million in compensation.

Notably, the US court judge is reportedly not bound to accept Epic’s proposal of reforms. At the same time, Google confirmed it would be considering an appeal against the recent decision over the controversy of monopoly in Android app distribution.

In a blog post, Epic Games proposed: “Google must also allow developers to communicate directly with their consumers, including linking from their app to a website to make purchases and get deals.”

The blog post also demands that “Google be blocked from using sham compliance programs like User Choice Billing to prevent competing payment options inside an app or on a developer’s website.”

Epic’s blog said, “Our proposed injunction seeks to block Google from repeating past bad-faith tactics and open up Android devices to competition and choice for all developers and consumers.”
