Google Pixel 8 and 8a get Gemini Nano with June 2024 Feature Drop
Google Pixel 8 and 8a start getting Gemini Nano with June 2024 Feature Drop. The company has started releasing June 2024 software update to Pixel phones with incredible new capabilities and improvements.
Unlike the Pixel 8 Pro, Google’s Gemini Nano AI will be available as a developer option in the Pixel 8 and 8a. Gemini Nano is the company’s most efficient AI model built for on-device tasks.
With Gemini AI, the Pixel Recorder app now offers more detailed, downloadable summaries, the ability to detect and include the names of speakers, and export transcripts into text files or Google Docs.
In addition, Pixel Camera is adding the best face-capturing feature. It can identify the best moment from your photo in HDR+. It will also let you manually pick which camera lens you want to use while taking photos.
With the June 2024 Feature Drop, the Find My Device network could be available on all supported devices. This upgrade allows you to locate your phone even when it’s off or the battery is dead.
Thanks to USB-C output support, Pixel 8 phone users can now display content on a larger screen, like your computer monitor. It gives you more space to enjoy your favorite movies, shows, and slides.

Google introduces AI-powered custom automations and enhances Pixel Camera features
Google is testing a new AI-powered feature called “Help me create” in the Google Home app. This tool is designed to simplify creating custom automations for managing smart home devices more effectively. At the same time, the December 2024 Feature Drop brings significant updates to the Pixel Camera app, including the return of “Quick access controls” and exciting enhancements for Pixel Fold devices.
“Help Me Create” for Custom Automations
“Help me create” uses AI to help users craft custom automations without needing technical knowledge. Unlike standard Personal Routines, these automations involve three main components:
- Starters: Define when the automation begins, such as specific times or device states.
- Conditions: Optional restrictions that refine when the automation can start, with two modes:
- Any: Starts if any condition is met.
- All: Starts only if all conditions are met.
- Actions: Specify what the automation will do, like dimming lights or locking doors.
Users can activate this feature by joining the Google Home Public Preview and enabling “Experimental AI features.” Afterward, navigate to the Automations tab and select “Help me create” to type or speak desired commands, such as:
- “Turn off all lights at sunset.”
- “Set a reminder for meditation time.”
- “Lock the doors when everyone leaves.”
This feature is currently in testing, supports only US English, and has limited device compatibility.
Pixel Camera 9.7 Brings Back Quick Controls
The latest Pixel Camera update restores user-favorite “Quick access controls” for brightness, shadows, and white balance adjustments. Previously, these controls were hidden behind a secondary menu, which many users found inconvenient.
Now, by enabling this feature in the settings, users can directly adjust these parameters by tapping on the viewfinder. This brings back the intuitive interface where sliders for brightness and shadows appear on the right, and white balance adjustments are on the left.
Additional Camera Updates for Fold Devices
For the Pixel Fold and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, a new Dual Screen Portrait Mode allows subjects to preview their photos on the external display. A fun feature called Made You Look entertains kids with characters like Joy from Inside Out, though Joy is exclusive to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and available only until December 3, 2025.
Other Updates
- Instagram users on Pixel devices can now capture photos in Ultra HDR using the app’s viewfinder.
- Snapchat has started using the system Photo Picker for a more integrated experience.
The Pixel Camera 9.7 update is rolling out via the Google Play Store. However, it is not yet available for manual sideloading.
These updates demonstrate Google’s efforts to blend AI innovation with user-friendly designs for its smart home and Pixel devices.
Android
Google extends Android updates for Pixel 6, 7, and Fold, plus new fixes for Pixel 9 with Android 15 QPR1
Google has announced a significant extension to its Android OS update policy for the Pixel 6 series, Pixel 7 series, and Pixel Fold. These devices will now receive Android OS updates for five years, aligning them with Google’s commitment to long-term software support.
Extended Updates for Pixel 6, 7, and Fold
When Google introduced the Tensor chip in the Pixel 6 series, it expanded its software support to five years, including three years of OS updates and two additional years of security patches. However, the newer Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series offer seven years of updates. This raised questions about whether the Pixel 6 and 7 generations would get extended support.
Google has now confirmed that these devices, including the Pixel Fold, will receive five full years of OS and security updates. This policy applies from the date the device first launched on the Google Store in the U.S.
Updated Support Policy Summary:
- 7 Years of Updates: Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and future models.
- 5 Years of Updates: Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold.
- 3 Years of OS Updates, 5 Years of Security Updates: Pixel Tablet.
The change was hinted at earlier when Android 16 Developer Preview listed support for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.
Android 15 QPR1: New Fixes for Pixel Devices
Google has also started rolling out the first Quarterly Platform Release (QPR1) update for Android 15. This update brings fixes and improvements across various Pixel models. OTA and factory images are now available for supported devices, though on-device updates may take a bit longer to appear.
Fixes and Improvements
The Android 15 QPR1 update includes 16 fixes across multiple areas:
- Audio: Stability improvements and fixes for USB audio-related reboots.
- Bluetooth: Enhanced range for Pixel 9 devices.
- Camera: Stability improvements in certain scenarios.
- Display & Graphics: Fixes for green screen tint issues.
- System: General stability and performance improvements.
- Telephony: Improved network connection reliability.
- User Interface: Fixes for lockscreen wallpaper issues, dark mode stability, swipe actions, and notification background colors.
- Wi-Fi: Improved wireless performance and stability.
Device-Specific Builds
Global updates have been released for all supported Pixel devices, including localized builds for certain regions (e.g., Telstra in Australia and EMEA countries).
Final Thoughts
With extended update support and continuous fixes, Google is reinforcing its commitment to enhancing user experience across its Pixel lineup. These changes ensure that even older devices remain relevant and secure for longer periods, aligning with the company’s focus on sustainable and reliable technology.
