Dark Mode comes to Google Photos on the web
Google Photos on the web now features a much-anticipated dark theme, joining other Google services like Drive and Calendar which have already gone dark.
When you log in, you’ll see a cheerful banner in the top-right corner announcing, “Dark mode is here! You can now apply a dark theme to Photos.” Just click on the settings gear icon to find the new “Appearance” option tucked under the backup quality settings. Here, you can choose between Light and dark, or let it match your device’s default setting.
The dark theme subtly changes the look of the gallery. The gallery background turns darker, making the sidebar, search bar, and other controls stand out less starkly. The familiar blue highlight color is used throughout, making everything feel unified and easy on the eyes. This design helps when you switch from the photo grid to viewing individual images, as the transition is smoother with the black background of the image viewer.
This update means Google Photos on the web now shares the dark theme with other Google services like Search, YouTube, Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Gemini. While mobile versions of these apps have embraced dark mode more quickly, the web version of Google Photos was a bit behind. I’m hoping Google Docs gets the dark treatment next. What about you?
