Google offers ‘Optional Departure’ for Pixel and Android team members
Google has recently merged its Pixel hardware and Android software teams into a single division, and they’ve now introduced an ‘optional departure program’ for employees in the Platforms & Devices team.
This morning, SVP Rick Osterloh emailed the staff about this new program, and Google has officially confirmed this to various news outlets. This initiative is exclusively for US employees involved with products like Android (including Auto, TV, Wear OS, XR), Chrome, ChromeOS, Google Photos, Google One, Pixel, Fitbit, and Nest. It’s important to note that this option isn’t available to employees in other groups like Search or AI.
The idea behind this program comes after comments and questions from employees about the merger. Some felt that not having an option to leave voluntarily during past restructurings was a downside. The program is designed for those who might find themselves less enthusiastic or aligned with the new combined mission or are struggling with the new work environment, including hybrid work policies. Employees choosing to leave will receive a severance package, though specifics are yet to be revealed. Importantly, this initiative isn’t linked to any changes in the product development plans.
The merger of software and hardware teams was part of Google’s effort to streamline operations, which included a shift to a functional organization model last year. This model means one team oversees hardware engineering across multiple product lines like Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit. The aim was to enhance decision-making speed within the company.
In the announcement, Google emphasized their desire for a team that is fully dedicated to their mission, aiming to build excellent products quickly and efficiently. They highlighted the significant progress of the team and the crucial work still ahead.
Google’s statement on this program underscores their commitment to keeping their workforce motivated and aligned with the company’s goals, ensuring everyone can contribute effectively to the future of their technology offerings.
