New Google Tool makes calls to local shops for you
Google is rolling out a new tool in its search labs called “Ask for Me.” This tool uses AI to make phone calls when you want to find out if services are available and how much they cost at local shops. Right now, it’s set up to help with bookings at nail salons and auto repair shops.
When you search for something like “oil change near me,” an “Ask for Me” option pops up. You can then tell Google exactly what service you need, like an oil change or tire rotation for your car. You’ll need to provide details such as your car’s year, make, model, and mileage, and specify if you need the service ASAP, only on weekdays or weekends.
For nail salons, if you’re looking for a manicure, you can choose from options like basic, dip powder, French, acrylic, gel/shellac, nail art, or just a polish change.
After you’ve given all the details, Google uses AI with a voice that sounds very natural to call local businesses. It then sends you back a summary of the prices and when you can get the service, either by text message or email, within about 30 minutes. This AI calling feature is similar to what Google uses for making restaurant reservations or updating business hours in Google Maps.
Keep in mind, “Ask for Me” is still in its testing phase and only works for English users in the U.S., with some people possibly waiting in line to use it.
