Google now asks for fingerprint or PIN for added login security on Android
Google has enhanced its 2-factor authentication (2FA) process on Android devices by introducing an additional security layer requiring users to confirm their identity with a fingerprint or PIN.
Recently, users have noticed a new step when they click “Yes, that’s me” on the Google login prompt. A message now appears asking you to “Use your screen lock” to verify that it’s you. This message pops up over the details of the device you’re using, how close it is, and the time of the login attempt, but you must use your fingerprint, face recognition, or enter a PIN to move forward.
Before, just clicking ‘yes’ would log you into another device or ask you to check a code. This new step adds more security but is quick and not much bother. It’s similar to the kind of check you do when you use Google Wallet.
This change is part of Google Play services update to version 25.02.34, which manages these features on Android. On iOS, the Google app or Gmail handles this login prompt.
This update means you have more ways to keep your account safe, alongside other 2FA methods like passkeys, security keys, or using an authenticator app. It’s all about making sure only you can access your account, keeping your information safe in an easy-to-use way.
