New features coming to Google’s Gemini app in 2025
During Alphabet’s earnings call for the last quarter of 2024, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, shared some exciting news about what’s next for the Gemini app. He mentioned that features from Project Mariner will be added to the app later this year.
Project Mariner is designed to “see” and make sense of everything on your web browser screen, from text to pictures, to help you get things done. Pichai explained that they plan to integrate capabilities from both Mariner and another project, Astra, into the Gemini app.
Back in December, Google gave us a sneak peek at Mariner, which works as a Chrome extension on desktops, enabling it to interact with web pages by typing, scrolling, and clicking.
On the mobile front, it was announced last month that Astra, which allows for screen sharing and camera use, will be part of the Gemini app on new Galaxy S25 and Pixel phones. However, there’s still some mystery about whether Mariner will only enhance the desktop version or if it will also come to mobile.
Pichai also touched on updates for Gemini 2.0 Flash, which has been made available to the public and will soon be accessible for developers to use starting Wednesday. He hinted at more model updates to come, emphasizing how Google is focusing on creating even more effective thinking models.
When asked about competitors like DeepSeek, Pichai confidently stated that Gemini 2.0 Flash, along with its thinking capabilities, stands out as one of the most efficient models available.
