Google Drive’s big button surprise

Published

Google Drive for Android might be getting a new look with a very big button for some users. Material Design, which Google uses for its apps, offers three sizes for what they call a FAB (Floating Action Button). There’s a Small one, a Medium one, and a Large one. Usually, apps stick with the Medium size, but Google Drive seems to be trying out the Large one.

In the usual setup, Google Drive has a Medium FAB for opening the camera and a special button that changes shape when you scroll. But today, on some phones, we’re seeing Google Drive use the Large FAB for its ‘New’ menu. This menu lets you make new folders, upload files, scan documents, or start new Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides. The camera button, however, stays the regular size.

Here’s how it looks:

  • Medium FAB: The common button size.
  • Small FAB: Often used for quick actions like opening the camera.
  • Large FAB: Now appearing for the ‘New’ menu in Google Drive.

When you scroll, both buttons go away, just like before.

This big button might just be a mistake since it’s only on some devices with Google Drive version 2.25.060.0. It can be a bit of an eyesore, especially when you’re looking at files in a grid. We hope Google fixes this soon to keep things neat.
