Is Google Pixel’s Music feature breaking down?
One of the coolest things about Google Pixel phones is the “Music Listener” feature. It lets you know what song is playing around you without needing to open an app or ask your phone. But lately, it seems this feature isn’t working as well as before.
“Music Listener” is a simple yet amazing feature. It started with the Pixel 2 and is still on the newest models. It uses a database to identify songs around you without using much data or draining your battery. Over time, it got better, like showing album covers and letting you jump right to a music player. Back in April 2024, someone suggested that Google should update and improve this feature a lot.
However, for many Pixel users, these updates aren’t the main issue. The bigger problem is that “Music Listener” just doesn’t work like it used to.
People on different platforms like Google’s forums, Reddit, and even Google’s problem tracker have been asking if recent updates have messed up this feature. It’s not just crashing; it’s just not identifying songs as well. Google did admit to a crashing problem during an Android update test but said they would fix it, though no updates have come since.
From personal experience, “Music Listener” doesn’t catch as many songs anymore. In my office, where music plays all day, it might only pick up 5-10 songs over hours. It might be because of how it interacts with other music services, but clearly, there are performance issues. Even during a movie, it only identified half the songs. And trying to manually search for songs? That’s not working well either.
The little music notification on the lock screen also appears less often, unless you’re messing with the settings. Google did release an update in late January, but it was mainly about showing album art better, not fixing these recognition problems.
Without clear answers from Google, it’s tough to say what’s going on. But something isn’t right since many users are noticing this. Some have tried clearing certain app caches or toggling the feature off and on to see if it helps, but the results are mixed.
